In this video we look how to propagate succulents from leaves in particular Echeveria by leaf cuttings. We use Echeveria Ling Snow which is known as Echeveria Ariel in the USA. We show the process as well as the results. This works for many Echeveria including PVN (Perle Von Nurnberg)

This process works well with many varieties including the Chinese Variety Ling Snow (凌雪) which is used in the video, Perle Von Nurnberg, Elegans and others. Ling Snow is thought to be a Laui X Champagne hybrid and in the USA is known as Echeveria Ariel.

Whenever I find a crested succulent at a box store, I twirl my mustache and look extra dastardly on the way out.
Last week I found a triple crested echeveria fire glow at Home Depot, and that made me rub my hands together and laugh very villainously.

Hi Johny, thanks for all the great videos. Wanted to send my respect to James Lucas, not sure I spell his name correctly. I love all his insights and tips. I have been planting succulents for around 4 years and I found he is among the best teacher or his video are the most practical and useful one for succulent planting. The only thing is I live in Malaysia, weather wise I need to adjust quite a bit because of the high humidity, heat and rainfall.
I will send the message on to James, and yes in Maylasia and other tropical to sub tropical climates you do need to adjust as you say. Good air flow is important for the humidity.

Really useful, thanks. Maybe some of my failures is due to not been letting my leaf cuttings callus for long enough, especially the fleshier cvs. I usually just leave them for 3-4 days (and this is in the relatively humid UK).
That said, I will have enough E. “Linda” plants to set up a shop when they get bigger. (The mother plant collapsed last autumn - damp, I suspect.)
Edit: query - does this also apply to leaflets taken from the inflorescence spike? I’m trying with my E. lauii at the moment.
Nothing wrong with an old kitchen knife ( or spoon in the right circs)!

I think that might be one of my mistakes I made. I thought you were only supposed to let them dry out for just 2 days, not 2/3 weeks… I’ll have to try this when I get more succulents

Great video, thanks. When you put the leaves into growing medium - lining them up along sticks in rows - are there drainage holes in the base of container? Did you say the medium was all vermiculite or a mix?
Yes drainage hole. vermiculite is just the top layer.

Spring or Summer are the best times, the colder the climate the later in spring or early summer..
The trays with the soil that are used to grow the propagations in at 6:50, are they solid in the bottom or do they have the mesh as seen on the upside down one?

They are so beautiful❤ last week. I was walking through my neighborhood and saw a cute lady attending to her succulent. Decided to ask her that I would love to buy a leaf just 1 leaf. Because they were so pretty. She began screaming at me. I just got teary eye, told her sorry, and walked away.
It's interesting how people react , I had the opposite experience at a plant fair just a few weeks ago. One plant left, sort of rare white flowering. I was looking at at and a lady said are you going to buy that, I was a little unsure, so said, no you take it. Saw her later at the plant fair, she came up and said, do you know these are easy to grow from cuttings. Broke me off a piece of her new plant, put it in a plastic bag, poured a little water in, tied the top and said, take it home, plant it and it will grow. And yes it is growing roots. Takes all types....

This is in a greenhouse, you could do this indoors, or outdoors on a protected patio ot similar. However not cold and wet.

I have a plant that I think is a mix with an echeveria and I am struggling to get the leaves to root. They have all produced a new plant but never any roots and soon the mother leaf would dry up and die and kill the baby plant with it. Do you have any suggestions about what I should do?
So the plant produces small offsets or Pups ? OR are you trying leaf propagation.

With the leaf, it needs to be removed from plant correctly. It needs to callus over before planting, just in contact with the soil and only just moist. OR no soil, no wter and leave it in a shaded but light position until roots form.

Hey, I was wondering how you would water them? It would be aggravating to have to spray the dirt around the roots of every single leaf on that tray so do you use irrigation or a giant mister or what? I also wanted to know if it is a big deal to get water on the leaves while misting?
Use a medicine syringe to target water into roots
Not a big deal. Don’t mist. You can avoid watering until the mother leaf dies completely. Some people water twice a week, some once a week. Small ones do require more water than bigger ones. Test it out! Although some do decide to just die on you lol even if conditions with the one right beside it are the same.

Hello Crystal, if you have the right conditions it works. This often happens when leaves get knocked off plants, in the tray, you will see some leave cuttings that have actually started to grow before they are planted.

Do you leave them out in the sun while you wait for root growth?
Under shade cover if outdoors, but depends on how hot your area is. I’ve accidentally burned mine to death before when the sun got too hot.

In case anyone else is wondering: I had to look up what is meant by "winter" and "spring" in Australia. Refers to the same temperature ranges that we think of for those terms in the northern hemisphere, but the months are the opposite.

Crests are becoming very popular with succulent collectors. Propagation is the same from leaf cuttings, but also possible by srem cuttings, see ruclips.net/video/li3A8UkQxNw/видео.html

Hi there, I bought my first set of succulents, great dirt, tray etc. Question..I expected small leaves to lay out and propergate. These seem when they arrived. Well small stock...larger than expected, do I break them apart and start propergating or plant these in my shallow container then split them apart later?

If you have just received them, and they were posted bare rooted, it may be best to get them growing properly before propagating.
Could you please tell what type of soil that is? Doesn’t that keep too much water? I was really expecting something more rocky . Thanks
You can repot them to more rocky substrate when they’re bigger and older. Small seedlings and leaf props require more water and if the water drains too well too fast, they can’t absorb it with their small, more delicate roots.

Yes, a general succulent potting mix.
I live in the bloody desert and the heat is unbearable. If I leave cuttings out for two weeks like that, they will completely dry out and die. Curious how yours don’t? What’s the temperature like? Here it will be 100degrees Fahrenheit by May.
Yes, you would need to change this to suit your climate.
So in your case we would not have them in sun at all, just filtered light or indoors. Also cut the callus over period back to 2- 3 days. Then use a little mist spray a few time a week. The other option, which may be better, is to try these at a cooler time of the year. How are temperatures in 1. Early spring. 2. Early autumn/fall.
I prorogated a large cactus leaf from a neighbor. It finally grew roots. I then planted it in soil. It is now deteriorating while growing long cactus leaf from the rotting leaf. What's my next step with the rotting leaf? Thank for any advice.
Just wait until it pulls away very easily or dies right off. If the new leaf has roots then the old one will be ready to remove.
I was just a bit confused on starting the cuttings. Did you let them dry, add to the trays and then they grew? or did you start them in the trays with the bamboo, take them out and then pot them up?
Yes, let them callus over for around 5 - 8 days before adding to the trays.
