Copian Union: Corredeian Commissar Concept Art
Here's a bit of a "demo" piece for my profile here. It's set in my "Chronicles of Opscura" canon (which I will be reviving and revising while I'm here), which is a military/political based canon set in a fantasy world populated by various species of Anthro creatures and insane beasties of all calibers.
Got a bit of lore to get you fine folks started.
Lore
The United Armed Forces Officer Corps
By the time the Steam Age rolled around, the mammoth Copian Union boasted the largest military on the planet: the United Armed Forces. It boasted sprawling fleets of sea and air ships bristling with obscene firepower, endless armor columns of hardy rumbling war machines, and countless divisions of infantry of all levels of skill, specialization, and experience. It's massive military was overseen by the United Armed Forces Officer Corps, which boasted the best commissions officers the Union could offer (as well as some who gained their commissions through knowing the right people, or having a mother/father close to the ministries and the high government). From the lowliest and most inexperienced Auxiliary Lieutenant to the most experience flag officer, the Officer Corps enforces Union doctrine amongst the masses of enlisted men, and ensures total efficiency and total loyalty of all men and women in uniform.
The Commissar
The Battalion is basic organizational unit used by the UAF. Each Battalion of infantry/armor/mechanized units is divided into several platoons, which is in turn divided into several squads. Squads are commanded by a Sergeant or low-level Lieutenant, Platoons commanded by a Lieutenant or Captain, and the Battalion itself is typically commanded by a Commodore or Commissar.
Commissar is the highest rank of field commander used in the military, and is both a coveted and well respected rank by all in the UAF, for Commissars bear the knowledge and finesse of the Union's finest generals, but the tenacity, strength, and combat prowess of its best foot soldiers. Commissars accompany their men into the field, often commanding them from just behind the lines, or in some cases, directly from the action. Their presence is both an empowering sight for battle-weary Troopers, but also a humbling one, for the Commissar will rarely tolerate cowardice, stupidity, or disorder amongst their units. Being of high rank, they enjoy the privilege of "Order through Discretionary Measure" protocol, which allows them to arrest traitors and cowards, temporarily demote commanders, and if need be, execute troops in the field (though fear of an Efficiency Audit by Defense Ministry Marshals keeps the Commissars and Commodores from going overboard with ODM privileges). The ranks of Commissars in the United Armed Forces is varied, boasting countless different species from all across the reaches of the Copian Union: from the strongest Krogg, to the most stalwart Human, or in this case, the most cunning Corredei.
The Corredei (a race of Avians residing in the Copian Corelands) are renowned for their quick-wit, keen sense of logic, agility, and finesse. It is fairly common to see Corredei among the ranks of Commissars, and it is entirely more common to see young Commissars amongst the aging members of other species. Corredei, a naturally intelligent and logical species, tend to shoot through the ranks more quickly than most other species, or graduate from the Military Academies more quickly. As such, it is entirely common to find a young 30 year old Commissar rubbing elbows with 40+ year old field officers.
The Corredei Commissar in the above picture is a good example of a "prime" Corredei Commissar: Young but experienced, well educated, and fiercely loyal.
Uniform
Captains and above tend to ditch the uniform of the General Army Troopers: they trade the standard green fatigues, trenchcoats and blast helmets for a more lightweight officer uniform comprised of a light coat, pants, boots, and officer's cap. Only Captains and Lieutenants that are placed in command of platoons gain access to this option, however. The uniform between Captains, Lieutenants, Commodores, and Commissars are largely the same aside from the added officer's trenchcoat for platoon commanders, and color: Platoon Commanders wear an olive uniform while Battalion Commanders wear khaki uniforms.
The Uniform is outfitted with a lightweight belt with hook-ons for pistol holsters and satchels, and a sash draped over the chest and pulled underneath the rank epaulette. On the right shoulder is the Red Phoenix, the symbol of the Copian Union, on the left is the battalion/platoon ID patch (bearing the name and numerals of both, for example, a soldier in the 4th platoon of the 1st Tactical Battalion would have a patch with "TACTICAL I PLATOON IV") and any special-unit identifiers (such as a patch for an anti-tank unit, a gunnery unit, etc). Battalion commanders boast a star in place of the Platoon number.
The Commissar in the above picture is the commander of the 4th Shock Battalion, the lightening bolt pin on his hat, and the patch on his shoulder are the unit insignia for the Copian Union's fearsome Shock Corps.
